Manduria, città di origine messapica, dopo i fasti del periodo ellenistico, testimoniati dalle scoperte archeologiche del secolo scorso, fu conquistata dai Romani nel 266 a.C. Dopo la caduta dell'impero romano, la città fu abbandonata dai suoi abitanti, ma risorse a nuova vita durante il periodo normanno, con il nome di Casalnuovo. Nel XVIII secolo la città riprese l'antico e glorioso nome di Manduria. Tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo la città si arricchì di numerosi edifici religiosi, come i conventi dei Domenicani, dei Francescani, dei Serviti, delle Benedettine e dello Spirito Santo e di nuove zone quali il Borgo Porticella, il Borgo del Rosario e Borgo S. Angelo . Nell'Ottocento la città conobbe un ulteriore sviluppo edilizio che arricchì il tessuto urbano di affascinanti e suggestivi esempi di architettura civile e religiosa, che hanno reso Manduria unica ed accattivante.
 

Manduria, town of Messapian origin, after the glories of the Hellenistic period, witnessed by the archaeological findings of the last century, was conquered by the Romans in 266 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the town was abandoned by its inhabitants but it raised again during the Norman period with the name of Casalnuovo. In the 18 th century the town resumed the ancient and glorious name of Manduria. Between the seventeenth and the eighteenth century the town was enriched by many religious buildings such as the Dominican, the Franciscan, the Servite, the Holy Spirit and the
Benedictine monasteries, and by the new districts of Borgo Porticella, Borgo del Rosario and Borgo S. Angelo. In the nineteenth century the town experienced a further development which enriched the townscape with charming and interesting examples of civil and religious architecture, which made Manduria unique and captivating.
